Upcoming and Past Workshops

OASUS workshops target specific content and skills that students and professors have identified as being foundational to success in coursework. Our workshops are interactive, relevant to current class content, and a great way to learn and connect with peers.

Week 1 Coding Workshops (Python and R) - Fall 2026

Experienced Python “Reboot” Workshop

  • Dust off your summer coding cobwebs and get ready for fall coursework! This 2-hour “Reboot” workshop is for coders with Python experience and refreshes skills through an instructor guided, but student-driven, collaborative word game project.
  • Monday, August 24th, 4 - 6 PM in Sewall 303

Python and R Coding “Start Up” Workshops

  • New to coding or the Python/R language? These “Start Up” workshops are for you! Work in pairs on hands-on exercises to prepare for coursework and to meet fellow coders in a supportive setting led by an instructor and peer educators. Attend one or both days!
  • Bring a laptop if you have one, but it is not required to attend.

R “Start Up” Workshop

  • Part 1: Tuesday, August 25th, 5:30 - 6:55 PM in O'Connor 132
    • Setting up RStudio
    • Variable assignment and arithmetic operations
    • Base R statistics
    • Importing, inspecting and saving a data set
  • Part 2: Wednesday, August 26th, 5:30 - 6:55 PM in O'Connor 132
    • Importing modules: tidyverse
    • dplyr intro
    • Pipe operator
    • dplyr functions: group_by(), summarize(), mutate()
    • Attendee choice:
      • Explore visualization with ggplot
      • Explore data cleaning with dplyr
      • Analyze an alternate data set

Python “Start Up” Workshop

  • Part 1: Tuesday, August 25th, 7:00 - 8:30 PM in O'Connor 132
    • Basic Syntax
    • Writing/Calling functions
    • Arithmetic and Comparison Operators
  • Part 2: Wednesday, August 26th, 7:00 - 8:30 PM in O'Connor 132
    • Control flow
    • if, elif, else
    • while loops
    • lists
      *Experienced attendees who feel they have the above "mastered" can opt for a mini coding project to apply prior knowledge

Math Foundations Workshops - Fall 2026

50-minute workshops designed to help you Learn, Review, and Apply foundational math concepts for courses in STEM.

Dimensional Analysis and Proportional Reasoning

Work with fractions, ratios, and rates as well as unit conversions.

The Unit Circle

Know the why of the unit circle beyond memorization to assist with calculator-free trig.

Coding Bootcamps (Python and R) - Spring 2026

(Concluded) An interactive 2-part series exploring introductory concepts in either Python or R during the first week of the Fall and Spring semesters. Attendees work in pairs on sample exercises to increase proficiency and meet fellow coders while being supported by peers/instructors. Bring a laptop if you have one, but it is not required to attend! Whether you're new to coding, looking to learn a new language, or just need a quick refresh in Python or R, these workshops are for you. All are welcome to attend one or both days.

Critical Reading - Spring 2026

This course-embedded workshop series is designed to encourage a more critical and effective approach to assigned reading. Through reflection, discussion, and hands-on practice, students work with concrete strategies and key questions around reading and learning.

This workshop is currently planned for students enrolled in COMM 120, HIST 102

Exam Wrappers

A key part of any exam is processing the results beyond what was incorrect. Exam wrapper workshops help break down course specific exams to reflect on what long terms habits, study strategies, and test taking tips can be promoted to improve performance on future exams.
