Testing Center

Information for Students

Welcome to the OASUS Testing Center!

OASUS partners with individual courses to offer an accessible testing environment for students with accommodated testing needs. Academic accommodations are an important way to ensure equitable learning for all students. For more information about accommodations, please contact the Student Disability Resource Center at sdrc@rice.edu. The SDRC can work with you to identify and approve appropriate academic accommodations.

Other students on campus will continue to receive testing accommodations through arrangements made directly with course faculty and departments, with support from the Student Disability Resource Center.

Students not enrolled in partner courses

Students who would like to take an exam in the center but are not enrolled in one of their partner courses may submit a request by completing the following steps:

  1. Communicate with your instructor to secure faculty approval to use the Testing Center. If your professor would like to know more about the Testing Center, they can find more information on our faculty page or by writing to oasus@rice.edu.
  2. Fill out this form: Request to Schedule Testing Through OASUS. The form will be reviewed by SDRC and OASUS professional staff only. If the SDRC verifies the accommodation, the Testing Center will determine if there is available space at the requested time. Availability is limited and not guaranteed.
  3. If approved, you will receive an email from oasus@rice.edu confirming your exam details.

Testing Center Policies

  • *Exams must be scheduled a minimum of 5 business days in advance of the testing date. Scheduling requests received less than 5 business days before the intended testing date will be considered a late request. Late requests are accepted but do not guarantee a secured testing date.
  • Students must take their exam between 8:30am and 5:30pm on the day of the regularly scheduled exam, or within the time-frame approved by their instructor. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that they comply with this policy.
  • Active Testing Center Hours are from 8:30am - 5:30pm during testing periods. Because all exams must be completed by 5:30pm, start times later than 2:30pm must be approved. These hours will be extended during the Final Exam period.
  • Late Arrivals and No-shows
    • Students arriving late for their scheduled exam may be asked to reschedule.
    • Students who miss a scheduled exam must meet with the Director before they will be permitted to schedule another exam. Contact us at oasus@rice.edu to request an appointment.
  • Restroom breaks are permitted. Before going to the restroom or stepping out for a break, please hand your test to the Testing Center staff member. They will return your test to you upon return from your break.
    • Note - For those students whose accommodations do not include breaks, the exam timer will not pause for breaks.
  • If your accommodations do include breaks, you will hand your test to the Testing Center proctor to begin your break and they will document the break start and end time. They will return your test to you upon return from your break and add the total break time to the remaining time for your exam.
    • Note - You are not permitted to leave the 5th floor of Fondren Library during your break.
  • At all times during your visit to the Testing Center, you are bound by the Rice Honor Code. Violations of the Honor Code will be reported to the Honor Council.

Testing Center Facilities

Located on the 5th Floor of the Fondren Library, our Testing Center includes a check-in area, a testing room with 17 carrels, and a private testing room (available April 8). Carrels are designed to reduce noise and distraction, and come with an adjustable overhead light (bright, warm) and noise-cancelling headphones. The center provides loaner laptops available for students whose accommodations require assistive technology and partners with the Disability Resource Center to provide access to testing in the DRC’s adaptive technology lab on the first floor of Fondren.

Row 1 - Left to Right: Check-in on the 5th floor of Fondren and store your belongings; Head to the testing room in 522A. Row 2 - Left to Right: Pick up your exam materials;  Head to your testing location. Row 3 - Right to Left: Warm light and cozy noise-cancelling headphones; Clocks within sight of all carrels.
