OASUS offers employment, training and community to peer educators at Rice. Our program cultivates a community of tutoring practice that values active engagement for deep learning, inclusive learning communities, and a focus on learn how to learn.
Employment
OASUS employs peer educators directly in the following roles:
- Drop-in Study Tutors provide course-specific tutoring to students who visit our Drop-in Study center in O’Connor.
- PAL Leaders plan and facilitate regular structured study sessions for specific courses.
- Drop-in Study Managers work to create a welcoming, efficient environment in our Drop-in Study center and contribute to marketing and outreach efforts.
- Lead Peer Educators and Managers coordinate teams and assist in training and observations, and serve as mentors to their colleagues.

Training and Professional Development
We offer opportunities throughout the semester for Rice peer educators to develop their skills, deepen their understanding of tutoring and learning, and participate in the peer educator community at Rice. Participants are paid for all professional development hours.
Foundational Training Program
- The Peer Educator Training Program provides paid training and professional development opportunities to all students engaged in peer education at Rice. The program pillars include a focus on collaborative learning, inclusive learning frameworks and metacognitive awareness. Our 8-hour foundational training series embeds these principles into a series of workshops held in the first three weeks of each semester. Ongoing Professional Development
- Workshops - Each semester, OASUS and our learning partners hold training workshops for Rice peer educators. Past topics have included Mindset and motivation in the peer tutoring space, Generative AI for peer educators, Strategies for working with groups, Designing a successful exam review, Showcasing peer education experience on resumes, Managing difficult situations, and more!
- Lunch & Learn Sessions - These gatherings, led by OASUS Lead Peer Educators, are opportunities to join other Rice peer educators for an informal discussion of your tutoring practice.
Community
As a peer educator at OASUS, you will have the opportunity to join a community of undergraduates working as peer educators in different programs across campus.
