The Office of Academic Support for Undergraduate Students (OASUS) at Rice is seeking undergraduate students motivated to assist their peers in an inclusive, collaborative learning community at our Drop-in Study center in the O’Connor Building for Engineering Sciences. Drop-in Study offers free peer tutoring for Rice undergraduates in over 20 foundational courses. Drop-in Study is offered throughout the semester, Sundays 2-10 pm and Monday through Thursday, 8-10 pm.

This exciting leadership opportunity will allow you to gain valuable professional skills, develop new relationships with faculty, staff, and peers, deepen your understanding of the material, and play a vital role in academic support at Rice.   

In this role you will be expected to:

  • Attend 8 hours of paid orientation training during the first half of the Spring semester
  • Work ~6 hours/week, including two 2-hour drop-in tutoring shifts per week, regular meetings with faculty and preparation of course content, and professional development meetings with staff
  • Apply equity-minded practices in all interactions with peers
  • Reflect and act on feedback provided by faculty and staff
  • Meet with the lead faculty to discuss course content and best tutoring practices
  • Participate in ongoing professional development meetings and workshops with staff
  • Proactively communicate with faculty and staff
  • Create a positive, welcoming culture in the Drop-in space
  • Market Drop-in tutoring resources to peers
  • Provide feedback to shape the future development and expansion of peer support resources at Rice  

New Peer Educators will be compensated $15/​​hour.

Eligibilityfor Peer Educators:

  • Currently enrolled Rice undergraduate in Spring 2025
  • Legally eligible to work in the United States
  • Minimum grade of A- in the course you want to tutor and prior enrollment in the course; some courses have alternative GPA minimums or additional requirements indicated on the application form.
  • Availability to work ~6 hours/week  
  • A strong commitment to helping peers learn
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills, time management, and attention to detail
  • Prior experience as a tutor, Academic Fellow/Mentor, or course TA is a plus, but not required

OASUS Peer Educator Application

Apply to be an OASUS Drop-in Study Manager

OASUS Drop-in Study Managers support the center by setting up the space, monitoring student check-in, managing the calendar and email, and assisting with marketing communications (social, web, print). Drop-in managers will be compensated $13/hour.

In this role you will be expected to:

  • Attend a mandatory one-hour training prior to the start of work, participate in one peer educator Lunch & Learn, and attend regular staff meetings throughout the semester.
  • Work two 2.5 hour shifts per week.
  • Welcome students into Drop-in and ensure that they check in
  • Remain up-to-date about scheduling, events and reviews
  • Create a welcoming, inclusive environment
  • Be responsible for setting up the space and breaking down after Drop-in hours, where applicable

New Drop-in Study Managers will be compensated $13/hour.

  • Currently enrolled Rice undergraduate in Spring 2025
  • Legally eligible to work in the United States
  • Availability to work ~5 hours/week  
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills, time management, and attention to detail

OASUS Drop-in Study Manager Application

Application Process

Spring 2025 applications are now open and are due December 6th, but will continually be reviewed on a rolling basis through January 3rd. After completing the online application, selected candidates will be contacted to participate in a 20-minute interview over Zoom during the week of December 9-13. Please note that applications will continue to be reviewed on a rolling basis until all positions are filled.

Note about Hiring Process - Prior to the start of the mandatory training offered in January, hired candidates must:

  • Complete the Eligibility Verification Form (or Form I9) with the Payroll Office. (Completion before starting work is a requirement of the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and not of Rice University.) Students must present to payroll staff original, unexpired document(s) at this time. Payroll staff will be available during office hours, MondayFriday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Direct Deposit Authorization and W-4 form may be completed at the same time with payroll.
  • Complete the ​​Peer Educator Contract.
